Holle vs. Lebenswert: What are the Differences?

Let's commence by highlighting the focal point: Holle epitomizes Lebenswert. Holle has introduced Lebenswert as a cost-effective yet premium-quality organic baby formula alternative for discerning parents.

The primary distinction between the two brands lies in Lebenswert's commitment to elevating responsible farming practices. Beyond mere organic certification, Lebenswert is a biodynamically certified company. This entails employing methods that are not only organic but also go a step further in promoting the well-being of the land, plants, and animals, surpassing conventional organic farming standards.

Holle, on the other hand, adheres to Demeter farming standards, which are notably more stringent. Consequently, the Holle formulas may be priced slightly higher due to the elevated organic standards demanded by the ingredients.

Ultimately, the choice between these esteemed organic brands hinges on your baby's tolerance and preference. Both Holle and Lebenswert are exceptional, organic options that surpass mainstream U.S. formulas, offering a superior choice for conscientious parents. Explore and select the one that aligns best with your baby's needs and preferences.

HiPP vs. Holle: Which Organic Baby Formula to choose?

Both HiPP and Holle boast certification from the European Commission, underscoring their commitment to adhering to rigorous standards for organic products mandated by the EU government. This regulatory body is entrusted with ensuring the safety and purity of foods, pharmaceuticals, and various commodities within the EU.

Holle formulas, in particular, go above and beyond by securing Demeter Biodynamic Certification, a comprehensive standard for biodynamic farming. This certification encompasses considerations for animal welfare, biodiversity, ecosystem preservation, and more.

Both brands, HiPP and Holle, present a diverse array of health-conscious options at a competitive price point. Furthermore, they offer formulas designed to mirror the nutritional profile of breast milk, ensuring optimal nutrition for your infant. To conveniently compare specific ingredients between Holle and HiPP, refer to our comprehensive baby formula comparison chart.

The decision is inherently personal. In reality, both products outshine their American counterparts, primarily owing to their organic composition. Each brand guarantees complete nutrition and promotes overall health. Opting for either HiPP or Holle is a choice that carries little risk – it's a matter of trial and preference to discern which resonates best with your baby's palate.

Why European Baby Formula?

European baby formulas closely mirror the nutrient composition of breast milk, meticulously excluding certain ingredients such as corn syrup and guar gum, which may not be conducive to a baby's initial dietary intake. Esteemed organic formulations like HiPP, Loulouka, Holle, and Lebenswert have garnered widespread popularity among infants in Europe, the United States, Canada, and beyond.

It's crucial to note that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate organic certification. While the FDA may provide some guidelines on organic standards, the absence of direct testing or approval places the responsibility for certifications on private entities. This introduces a potential conflict of interest. Conversely, in Europe, the European Commission oversees the certification of organic foods, including formula, adhering to stringent standards that definitively define what qualifies as organic. This robust certification process ensures that products labeled as "organic" in Europe consistently meet these rigorous standards.

What about American Formulas?

Many U.S. baby formula brands are under the ownership of pharmaceutical companies, reflecting in their labels that often read like an extensive list of chemicals. In contrast, European organic formulas are characterized by the inclusion of whole ingredients supplemented with essential vitamins. While we refrain from passing judgment on the complete nutritional value of American formulas, those seeking organic alternatives may find European versions to be notably more dependable. Explore the transparency and quality of European organic formulas for a choice aligned with your preferences.

American Formula vs. European Formula. Which is better?

Conventional American baby formulas adhere to standard formulations devoid of organic ingredients, thus potentially containing pesticides and GMOs, substances with unverified safety for human consumption. Notably, these formulas prominently feature corn syrup, a highly processed genetically modified sugar, as a primary ingredient. Consequently, infants consuming such "standard" formulas may inadvertently develop an early affinity for sugar.

In contrast, European organic formulas, exemplified by brands like HiPP, Holle, Lebenswert, operate on the fundamental premise that nature serves as an ideal blueprint. Their approach involves transforming non-human milk (from cows or goats) to closely emulate the composition of human milk. Embracing a philosophy of simplicity in baby formula, Europeans leverage the power of nature to craft what is considered among the world's finest formulas.

A scrutiny of ingredients effortlessly reveals the self-evident distinction in quality. Consider exploring European organic formulas for an alternative aligned with the philosophy of harnessing nature's goodness for optimal infant nutrition.

Demeter vs. Bioland Farming: What’s the Difference?

Demeter and Bioland certifications impose stringent criteria on chemical use, crop rotation, and animal treatment, making attaining these certifications a challenging process. The transformation from pesticide and additive-based farming to meet these elevated standards typically spans several years.

  • Demeter farming, in particular, adheres to exceptionally strict animal welfare regulations. Notably, Demeter farmers are prohibited from removing cow horns, a factor that may influence the taste of the milk. Furthermore, Demeter milk farmers are restricted to utilizing feed exclusively from other Demeter-certified farms, ensuring a feed source free from added chemicals or antibiotics.
  • The Demeter standard prohibits the use of chemical fertilizers on farms, distinguishing it from Bioland farming, which permits minimal quantities of nitrogen/copper fertilizers.

While Demeter standards exhibit an incremental strictness, both Demeter and Bioland certifications significantly surpass typical "organic" certifications prevalent in American farming. These certifications signify a substantial leap forward in terms of environmental and ethical farming practices.

Which Stage is right for my Baby?

In the United States, infant formula is typically marketed as a one-size-fits-all product, irrespective of whether the baby is 1 month, 6 months, or 11 months old. Conversely, European formulations adopt a more nuanced approach, offering a series of stages that align with a baby's evolving nutritional requirements from infancy to beyond one year. Most major European formula brands feature four distinct stages.

Each formula box prominently displays the recommended age range, providing parents with the opportunity to select a product that precisely caters to their baby's current developmental stage. Simply choose the formula that corresponds to your baby's age for targeted and age-appropriate nutrition.

Should I move up in the stages?

Certainly. As a child undergoes growth and developmental changes, his nutritional needs evolve accordingly. To guarantee that your baby receives the essential nutrients necessary for optimal growth and well-being, we advise using the formula stage that aligns with his current age. European formula manufacturers have dedicated considerable effort over the years to refine formulations, meticulously addressing the distinctive dietary requirements at each stage of a baby's development. Choose the formula stage that corresponds to your baby's age to ensure comprehensive and tailored nutritional support.

Holle PRE vs. Holle Stage 1: What’s the Difference?

The primary distinction between Holle Stage 1 and Holle PRE lies in the presence of maltodextrin.

Holle PRE, uniquely, excludes maltodextrin and opts for organic lactose as a substitute, enhancing its nutritional profile. In contrast, Holle Stage 1 formula incorporates maltodextrin. Both formulations are of exceptional quality, and the choice between them essentially boils down to personal preference. Select the one that aligns with your individual preferences and considerations.

HiPP Combiotic Stage 1 or HiPP Combiotic PRE?

The key distinction between HiPP Combiotic Stage 1 and HiPP Combiotic PRE lies in the presence of starch.

HiPP Combiotic PRE is devoid of starch and instead incorporates organic lactose as a substitute, contributing to its enhanced nutritional composition. On the other hand, HiPP Combiotic Stage 1 formula includes starch. Nevertheless, both formulas are of exceptional quality, and the choice between them ultimately hinges on personal preference. Select the option that aligns with your individual considerations and preferences.

What is the difference between HiPP HA Stage 1 and HiPP HA PRE?

The primary distinction between HiPP Hypoallergenic Stage 1 and HiPP Hypoallergenic PRE lies in the presence of starch.

HiPP Hypoallergenic PRE excludes starch and opts for organic lactose as a substitute, augmenting its nutritional content, whereas HiPP Hypoallergenic Stage 1 formula incorporates starch. Both formulations are of exceptional quality, and the choice between them ultimately rests on personal preference. Select the option that aligns with your individual considerations and preferences.

My Pediatrician recommended American formula. Why should I consider purchasing Organic Formula from Europe?

Did you know that many hospitals and pediatricians have contractual agreements with baby formula manufacturers who invest significant sums to promote their products within hospital settings? Instead of settling for a potentially subpar choice, consider opting for the best nutrition for your baby.

While we acknowledge potential skepticism about selecting a formula not recommended by a healthcare provider, we encourage you to thoroughly examine the ingredient list. A considerable number of formulas lack organic ingredients, potentially exposing infants to pesticides and GMOs, substances with uncertain safety for human consumption. Notably, the primary ingredient in some formulas is corn syrup, a highly processed genetically modified sugar.

In contrast, European organic formulas are crafted without the use of toxic substances. The ingredients are safe, natural, nutritious, and wholesome, devoid of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, GMOs, or added sugars. Prioritize your baby's well-being by exploring organic formula options that adhere to higher standards of purity and nutritional excellence.

What is Maltodextrin and why is it used in Baby Formulas?

Maltodextrin, a plant-derived sweetener, is characterized by high solubility, swift digestibility (with a high glycemic index), and low sweetness. These attributes make it particularly suitable for incorporation into baby formula. The notable high solubility ensures that powdered formula dissolves rapidly and seamlessly, facilitating ease of consumption for infants.

The inclusion of Maltodextrin in infant formulas is widely acknowledged and accepted within the industry. Importantly, there are no known drawbacks or disadvantages associated with the consumption of formulas containing Maltodextrin. Trust in the well-established use of Maltodextrin in baby formulas, where its properties contribute to the formulation's efficacy and suitability for infant nutrition.

What are Probiotics?

Probiotics, often referred to as "good" bacteria, play a crucial role in populating the digestive tract. Introducing probiotics into your baby's diet fosters the growth of a healthy gut flora, offering the additional benefit of alleviating and preventing constipation. Various strains of probiotics, including Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, contribute to a well-balanced microbiome in a healthy baby.

The positive effects of probiotics extend beyond gut health, encompassing improvements in immune response, reduction of colic, and prevention of eczema. Ensuring that formula-fed infants incorporate probiotics into their diet can emulate the immunity-boosting properties of breast milk. Notably, approximately 30% of a breastfed baby's microbiome is derived from the natural probiotics present in breast milk.

When choosing a formula with probiotics, examine the ingredients list for the presence of Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium to ensure that your baby benefits from these essential components promoting digestive and immune health.

I've heard DHA is very important for my baby. What is DHA?

DHA and ALA represent omega-3 fatty acids crucial for nutritional well-being. DHA sources encompass fish oil, egg oil, squid oil, and krill oil, while ALA sources include walnuts, edible seeds, clary sage seed oil, algal oil, flaxseed oil, and hemp oil. DHA plays a pivotal role in the development of brain and eye tissues. However, it's essential to note that the DHA and ALA incorporated into most infant formula brands differ in structure from the fatty acids present in breast milk.

Despite the widespread inclusion of DHA in formulas, no conclusive studies have established its benefits. Several published studies have indicated that the addition of DHA and ALA "had no proven benefit regarding vision, cognition, or physical growth." Notably, both breast milk and organic formulas inherently contain essential fatty oils conducive to brain health. Make informed choices about your infant's nutrition by considering these aspects when selecting formula options.

Is Palm Oil safe for my Baby?

Certainly! Palm oil stands out as one of the rare vegetable oils naturally abundant in saturated fat. Unlike many other vegetable oils, which are predominantly composed of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, the amalgamation of palm oil with rapeseed oil and sunflower oil creates a balanced fatty acid profile, meeting the essential nutritional requirements for infants.

Storage durations differ among manufacturers:

Implementing these storage recommendations helps optimize the longevity and quality of your chosen formula.

How do I store the formula?

For formulas packaged in a box, we recommend transferring the contents from the silver packaging to an airtight container for optimal storage.

Ensure both opened and unopened containers are stored in a clean, cool, and dry location, such as a pantry, drawer, or cabinet. It's essential to keep them away from direct sunlight. Avoid refrigerating containers of formula powder, as the humidity in the fridge may lead to clumping. Please note that powdered formula is not suitable for freezing. Proper storage practices contribute to maintaining the quality and

How do I prepare the formula?

This question holds significant importance as incorrect formula preparation may pose risks to your baby. However, rest assured that the formula preparation process is straightforward and swift. Here is a step-by-step guide:

1. Sterilize the bottle, teat, and ring by boiling them in water for 3 to 5 minutes before use.

2. Freshly boil water for each meal and let it cool to around 50°C / 122°F.

3. Pour approximately half of the boiled water into the sanitized bottle.

4. Utilize the provided measuring spoon, filling it flat (not heaping), and add the correct number of scoops according to the instructions.

5. Seal the bottle tightly and shake until the powder completely dissolves. Add the remaining water, shake lightly again to ensure even distribution and dilution.

6. Cool the formula (hold the bottle under cold running water or place it in the refrigerator) to approximately 37°C / 98.6°F before feeding. Test on your forearm to ensure it's not too hot before feeding immediately.

Additional Tips:

- Exclusively use the provided scoop.

- Avoid altering the formula strength by adding extra water/scoops and refrain from adding anything else to milk feeds.

- Prioritize hygiene by preparing feeds fresh, without advance preparation. Use feeds promptly and discard any remaining formula at the end of the feed.

- Bottles at room temperature should be consumed within 2 hours. Bottles stored in a cooler with ice or a cold pack should be consumed within 4 hours. Refrigerated bottles should be consumed within 24 hours.

- Avoid microwaving formula to prevent hot spots.

- Open formulas should be consumed within 21 days, while sealed formulas should be used by the expiration date on the box.

Following these guidelines ensures safe and proper formula preparation for your baby's well-being.

Is it necessary to boil the water?

Yes. It is strongly advised to adhere to the manufacturer's instructions for formula preparation. Utilize clean water, whether from the tap or a bottled source. Boiling the water is crucial, as it effectively eliminates bacteria and contaminants that may pose a risk to your baby. For municipal water sources, it is recommended to use tap water that has been boiled for one minute and subsequently cooled down to approximately 50°C or 122°F. This pre-treated water should then be mixed with the formula. Following these guidelines ensures a safe and hygienic preparation process for your baby's formula.

Is it necessary to Sterilize my bottles?

It is crucial to meticulously adhere to the preparation instructions provided with your formula. Prior to bottle preparation, ensure thorough handwashing and clean all necessary equipment, including bottles, collars, covers, and nipples, using hot, soapy water.

There exists some debate regarding the necessity of sterilizing bottles after each use, particularly when a clean water supply is available. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), bottles remain acceptable for use if cleaned in hot, soapy water with a bottle brush, while avoiding direct contact with the sink. Alternatively, they can be cleaned in a dishwasher with a heated drying cycle or sanitizing setting.

Nevertheless, it is imperative to sterilize bottles before their initial use. Sterilization is also recommended under specific circumstances, such as when a baby has been recently unwell, is born prematurely, or has underlying health concerns. Seeking guidance from your pediatrician, particularly for infants under three months old, is advised.

For a comprehensive guide on cleaning, sanitizing, and storing infant feeding items, the CDC offers valuable information at the following link:

Can I store bottle feeds to use later?

The safest practice is to prepare a fresh feed whenever needed and promptly consume it. Prepared feeds, when stored at room temperature, create favorable conditions for bacterial growth.

In situations where it's necessary to prepare feeds in advance for later use, follow these steps: prepare them in individual bottles, cool them rapidly, and store them in the refrigerator (maintained at no higher than 5ºC). Discard any refrigerated feed that remains unused beyond 12 hours. Before feeding, ensure thorough shaking of the bottle and check the temperature to achieve the recommended drinking temperature of 98.6° F/37° C. This approach helps maintain the freshness and safety of the prepared formula.

Can I refrigerate the opened box/can of formula powder?

Regardless of the formula variant you've chosen, it is essential to store both opened and unopened containers in a clean, cool, and dry environment, such as a pantry, drawer, or cabinet. It is advisable to shield them from direct sunlight. Avoid refrigerating containers of formula powder, as the resulting humidity can lead to clumping. Freezing baby formula is not recommended.

Exercise caution against exposing baby formula containers to extreme temperatures, whether excessively hot or cold. As a general guideline, it is recommended to store formula containers within the temperature range of 55°F to 75°F (13°C to 24°C). Furthermore, they should not be subjected to temperatures exceeding 95°F (35°C) or falling below 32°F (0°C). Adhering to these storage conditions ensures the optimal quality and efficacy of the formula.

How long is refrigerated formula good for?

For reasons of hygiene, it is recommended to prepare your baby’s formula just before feeding, prioritizing freshness. However, recognizing that on-the-go situations may not always permit immediate preparation, it is acceptable to prepare a bottle and refrigerate it for a minimum of one hour before heading out.

As per guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), referenced at https://www.cdc.gov/nutrition/infantandtoddlernutrition/formula-feeding/infant-formula-preparation-and-storage.html, bottles at room temperature should be consumed within two hours of preparation and within one hour of initiating a feed. Bottles stored in a cool bag with ice packs should be utilized within four hours. While prepared formula bottles can be refrigerated, they should be consumed within 24 hours to maintain freshness and safety.

Due to the potential for bacterial growth when infant saliva contacts formula, it is advised to discard any remaining formula at the conclusion of the feed. These practices align with recommended guidelines for optimal infant formula preparation and storage.

Do I have to pay import duty?

The likelihood of incurring additional fees from customs is minimal; however, it's important to note that customs policies differ significantly from one country to another. Shipments outside the EU may be subject to import taxes, customs duties, and associated fees.

How much Formula should I order?

We recommend opting for our specially designed Starter Kits, tailored to provide approximately a two-month supply of formula.

The quantity needed depends on your baby's appetite, and here's a general benchmark: On average, infants typically require 2.5 ounces of formula per pound per day. For instance, an average 8-pound newborn may need around 20 ounces of formula daily.

Babies typically feed based on their hunger cues, and their appetites can vary. Moreover, each baby's nutritional requirements fluctuate from day to day and month to month. By adhering to the feeding guidelines outlined on each box and regularly consulting with your baby's doctor, you can ensure your baby's nutritional needs are met.

Does Scanning/Irradiation in customs hurt the products?

Similar to other perishable goods imported from overseas, our formula shipments undergo a customs clearing process, which may involve passing through an X-ray machine. It's important to note that the scanning process does not cause any harm to the product.

As per the FDA, "There are no known adverse effects from eating food, drinking beverages, using medicine, or applying cosmetics that have been irradiated by a cabinet X-ray system used for security screening." Given that all imported goods are subject to screening, stringent safety protocols are implemented to guarantee that perishable products passing through X-ray inspection systems remain safe for consumption.

Does high temperature affect my package?

Researchers from Sapienza University of Rome's food chemistry department conducted a 2015 study to assess the impact of high temperatures in storage facilities on the stability of powdered infant formula. The study involved storing 30 formula samples at varying temperatures and monitoring them for a year. The findings highlighted specific scenarios in which the quality of baby formula could be compromised due to improper storage:

1. Exposure to unusually high temperatures (e.g., 55°C or 131°F) for a period exceeding two weeks.

2. Prolonged storage beyond the expiration date.

3. Opening of the original packaging.

Even when stored at relatively warm temperatures (e.g., 40°C or 104°F), powdered formulas demonstrated "good stability of the analyzed products." The researchers concluded that an extended period of storage under extreme and unusual heat conditions, such as 55°C (131°F), would be required for the fats and oils in infant formula to become susceptible to autoxidation (spontaneous oxidation) and initiate breakdown.

For further details, you can refer to the study at this link: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5224537/
